orienting helix spring in Assembly

I created a spring (well, I copied it actually, then modified), but adding to an assembly was a little problematical. Mmm...not so much the addition , but getting it aligned. The final spring object has no concept of the main coil axis. Now, I want it aligned around a rod, so how do I get the spring to have a central axis to align with the rod?
