Mass, Stock Materials and Material Properties

I just had to find the mass of a product I had designed in Onshape, it was ready for shipping and wanted a mass and size estimate to give the courier. I thought this would be a quick thing to do, just load up the Onshape assy, grab the Mass and Dims and move on. Unfortunately, even though I had spec'd the material for all the drawings this hadn't added the material properties hence no mass. I then had to go through the part studio's and add material properties, which was a bit of a pain. In my previous CAD, this process was seamless, once the material was spec'd you could rely on the mass shown in the CAD system.
I am really looking for a better way to spec stock material (this is, and should remain different to the material properties) for parts that transfer seamlessly to BOM's and also update the material properties to ensure correct mass are shown.
I am not sure if there are specific improvement request for these but keen to hear if other's have similar requirements or pain in this area.
