Spline on a shaft

I've been trying to create a spline on a shaft by drawing the end shape of the spline on the face of the shaft, removing it using the extrude command, patterning the extrude then using the boolean operation to subtract one from the other. As you can imagine, it fails! What's the easiest way to achieve this please?

Asking people to type an answer to a problem they haven't seen is very difficult and rarely yields a good result.
Post a link - problem fixed and you have a working copy to use as a template

The reason was that sketch one wasn't closed. This meant that Revolve one created a surface and not a solid body.
You can only perform boolean subtracts on a solid body.

You've made your initial grey part (the shaft) as a surface. As such you can't boolean the solid spline parts away from it.
Change that initial revolve from surface to solid and you'll be golden.

Just because you're taller doesn't mean you should be at the top.

We really need a Tshirt program for the 'helpers'
@philip_thomas, that's this weeks up votes plus extra points for accepted answers. You also get a pretty badge for 50 accepted answers.
If we pool our points we're still way short of @3dcad, so if there are t-shirts to be had I think he gets first and second picks!!
