Disappearing sketches - unable to use/convert

I've been happily showing/hiding features and 'using/converting' elements from sketches on other planes.
Occasionally, however, when I start a new / edit an existing sketch, the other existing sketches disappear.
Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't, but I can't identify what the common factor is.
If I select 'final' , the other sketches are shown but can't be selected to 'use/convert'.
What are the common reasons for this?
Many thanks.
