converting part to sheet metal

I would like to know to convert a part to a sheet metal flat pattern, the part is already drawn up to correct dimensions, I just need to convert it to a flat pattern so i can get it laser cut but when I go to sheet metal and the covert tab its not converting but rather making a sheet metal model.
