I will try tonight, Thanks...right now it seems like all I can get is that mouse trace. it seems very elusive to get the rectangle every time. Maybe I need to slow down and let the server update me

AFAIK there is no lasso select in OS. The selection rectangle works in a touch or surround mode depending on you drawing it from left to right or right to left, though.
  • here is the lasso  and the rectangle from the snip command ,  I have not yet figured out how to turn off the lasso, it seems to have a mind of its own

That's not a lasso. It doesn't select things. That's a trace of where your mouse has been. It will trim bits of sketches which it crosses.

  • interesting, but useless to me,, how to I get it to reliably give me the rectangle?
  • In the Sketcher, if you hit the Trim tool and want to get back to selection, hit Escape (or you can click on the Trim tool a second time).

  • Perhaps there's something in your set up where you're accidentally hitting the M key which is the shortcut for Trim.

  • I doubt it, I am pretty mouse centric, I only use the escape key...still a newbie
