Segmenting an existing line

Can I segment an existing line?
Tried adding points but those don't segment the line i.e. I'm not able to select separate segments after placing the points on the line.
I added a construction line and now want to add several equally spaced points on the line for the hole feature to have equally spaced holes.
If I draw a line in several segments to begin with then I can select all the segments and add an equals relation to make the segmenting points equally spaced.

maybe better to use curve pattern of hole feature along the line or any other curve, it gives more associativity

What is the 'curve pattern of hole feature'? I would like to space holes along curve (in this case ellipse). In picture I have dimensioned in straight line, however is there a way to place the points (or holes) a distance along the curve?
