My school project - setting the depth for a cylinder

I am a first time user doing a project for school. I want to add a cylinder (for a piston) in to a solid block. I have added a circle and extruded it and it went through the hole block. Can someone tell me how I can set a specific depth. Thanks Holly

In case you're trying to make a cylindrical hole instead of a protrusion, just select the Remove option. Setting the depth is the same as Paul' video.
