Rotating features in a circular pattern

I am trying to rotate features about a line in a circular pattern but it is not working. When I choose the line for the axis to rotate the features, the description for the line is changed to "edge of sketch" and the rotation does not work. What defines an axis and can I create one for rotation?

Can you leave the failing circular pattern in your document? I'm looking at your document and your sketch line should be fine as an axis, but I'm not sure what you are trying to rotate, and what you mean by failing. @mitchell_machelski I would try a face pattern instead of a feature pattern. Feature patterns are tricky. They're great in theory, but there are some important downsides. First, since you're patterning the features, you have to also pattern any reference geometry that would be required by the patterned features (planes, etc). Feature patterns also take longer to rebuild. If you have a complicated set of features that need to be replicated exactly (like on a flat even surface) with no modification, face pattern would be a better option. Alternatively, if your feature is the result of a Boolean, then try a part pattern followed by a Boolean on all the patterned bodies.0

As stated in the error message (accessed by hovering your mouse over the feature name), you need to select "apply per instance":

Ah, and then there's "apply per instance". I forgot OS just added that option this week
This in effect makes your feature pattern a face pattern, but without the inconvenience of selecting individual faces. 0 -

Just to clear things up:
Having "apply by instance" off something similar to a face pattern using feature selections.
Having "apply by instance" on does the old behavior of feature pattern (re-executes the features in the selection for every pattern instance).Jake Rosenfeld - Modeling Team0 -
