Change extrusion depth?

I'm totally new to cad and I'm going through the learning modules. I'm supposed to extrude one section of the part to 40 mm and another section to 25 mm but when i go to add an extrusion it will change the depth of the whole part. What am I missing?

are you adding a new extrude feature, or editing the original?6
