Select items to insert

rune_thorsen229rune_thorsen229 Member Posts: 179 ✭✭
Doing context editing the menu that says: "Select items to insert" proposing select parts/surfaces/sketches
It does however only allow for a part, NOT a sketch to be selected.
Is that intended?

NeilCooke, I got a message: "works for me", but I cant open your answer?

It's a known issue. The workaround is to "go to assembly" then insert the sketch from there. If you used the assembly origin to create the in-context part studio, then just clicking the green checkmark on the insert dialog will position the sketch in the correct place.

@NeilCooke thanks, so you cant insert sketches with construction lines.
While were here. Is there a way to create a new context if you have inserted parts in an assembly without using "create studio in coontex"?

Negative, I have tried to use 'origin to create the in-context part studio' but  the green checkmark doesn't work in that case.
I have to manually go back to the assembly and insert it manually.
Thumbs up for the known issue.

Yes - about halfway down that menu there is "edit in context"

But it doesn't let me define a new context !?
  • NeilCookeNeilCooke Moderator, Onshape Employees Posts: 5,308
    That's what that option does

    Negative.

    No new context.

As soon as you create an in-context reference, the context will be created.

    Where/how do I create an in-context reference?

Edit/create a feature and reference geometry from a ghosted assembly part.

'touch' any of the ghost parts with a feature.

Either a sketch constraint or a extrude or transform etc.

Sorry, I don't get it. Is it a workaround for a known issue?
I create a new feature in context but nothing changes.
    here is my test document:https://cad.onshape.com/documents/f41f2af9004d128718f44f82/w/fcae7b6ae2fec7dc6c0060a6/e/98db86e87ddfc10938bb0b40

Huh? The clue is in the name "in-context reference". Everything you need to know can be found at https://learn.onshape.com

john_mcclary, that more clear. I've been there. I did something and my context menu came back with this context menu:
    before it wasn't there, like:

That video doesn't explain why. It doesn't tell about ''touch' any of the ghost parts with a feature.'
    The help see
https://forum.onshape.com/discussion/comment/25254/#Comment_25254 is also hazy about this.
    Thanks

    Sooo the answer is

In assembly - context menu: edit in context

Then in the Part make constraining something  of the ‘ghosted’ part will bring up the missing menu items in the ‘context menu’.

(Hmmm. it's like the seven taps on software version to get developer options enabled on Android)

    thanks @NeilCooke
  • john_mcclaryjohn_mcclary Member, Developers Posts: 3,890 PRO
Well, It's more like, "We won't show a menu option, unless there is somewhere to go with it."

Can't have a button for 'edit context' if there is no context to edit.
So first step is to make a context. (Make sure the edited part is in the assembly if you are creating an entirely new part studio as we did with "printed part" in your document) Then you can edit to your heart's content.
