Sketch Linear Pattern: Can I use variable for the number of instance?

Is it possible to obtain a reference to the highlighted dimension in subsequent steps, regardless of how many instances there are?

This is bothersome especially for sketching on a flat pattern. Using a feature/face pattern on the flat pattern is not possible. What I sometimes do, is pattern out way more sketch entities then I need. Then I use a config list and configure which sketch faces are selected in a feature. You get a similar result but not infinite.0
