Re: Automatic Feature Folders from which part the features affect
I do think there could be better ways to see which features affect which parts, but I don't think folders in the way you describe them would be very useful (and I'm not sure it would be technically possible) because each feature only really makes sense in the context of the timeline for the part studio and each feature… -
What are those big issues with developing drawings..?
Let's begin with the fact that Onshape feels very good 'on hand' when working in 3D. And to be honest this is true with other 3d packages I have used too. Everything is smooth and fast, tool set covers most of needs and there is many 'smart' tools to raise productivity. But when you open drawings, it's like going 20 years… -
What exactly are you modelling?
I often see a big disconnect between what models actually are and how people try to use them. This is true for all types of models, but here it makes sense focus in on solid models for mechanical design capture. I'm really curious about what other peoples experience has been. A fundamental premise is that a model is an… -
Re: Right order of doing things in onshape?
Some guidelines to keep in mind: * Think very carefully before you start modeling what orientation makes the most sense for your part/project * Sketcher solves its constraints simultaneously * Features are sequential * When choosing references for sketches or features, try to use the earliest/most unlikely to change thing… -

Re: How to make BOM's awesome?
Not got time to weigh in properly but I'll jot down some things I have needed over the years that are hard to do. 1. Part nos vs item nos. many industries don't use part numbers as the components are standard materials that are cut to length or fabricated to a specific format for a specific job. This is particularly true… -
Re: After you copy a part edit becomes poor
I think one of the key issues that "philosophically" the whole concept of "copy-move-edit" doesn't really fit in the context of parametric design. That's the way things work in Autocad but it's jut not very efficient. I've tried to come up with a better example of ways to use configurations, variables and "reference". It's… -
Re: Multiple Part Studios or Multiple Parts Per Studio?
It depends on what you are designing. If the parts are related (dimensions depend on each other, shapes depend on each other, tightly integrated, etc.), it's best to put them in one part studio so that they can be modified together and you can visualize how they will fit together (e.g. parts of a casing with snap hooks… -
Re: How do I mate these parts?
Thank you everyone for your input so far. BUT... first of all, the model is public. It's called Plant Stand and any of you are welcome to have a look at it. Secondly, I did make only one instance of this wedge shape and I am attempting to assemble it in an assembly. My issue is that I can't find a mate connector that will… -
Re: Suggestion for renaming, relocating, or better describing of "Derived"
I agree the word Derived probably came from its prior use in SW. The story of how I came to need the use of the Derived function: I started out as a complete newbie... I learn to make a cube... wow that's amazing (hah). Now I advance to dimensions, fillets and adding holes, etc, etc. Soon after this I had made a widget…
