Still no improvements to dimension references?
EDITED to remove the word "Driven"
Is it still the case that you can not set two dimensions equal or mathematically related to each other within the same sketch?
How can this not be resolved after years of improvement request? It gets pretty tiresome to keep making triangles every time you want two driven angles to be equal, or two lines to be proportional.
And no, Variables do not solve this, it's something that needs to be done within a single sketch, without leaving the sketch.
Re: Onshape server down?
Yes, the status page said it went down 45min ago,
I'm sure they are hard on it
Re: Onshape server down?
Drat! I knew those "China" surveillance balloons were up to no good!
Re: How is selecting an entire sketch as input intended to work?
Extrude and other features like Revolve allow individual faces or entire sketches from the feature tree to be selected as inputs. For more complex part studios, it's best practice to store only one sketch region per sketch. This way you can have that entire sketch feature selected as the input for a feature. When the sketch changes to any shape, the feature will always reference the entire sketch and you wont need to re-select the faces again, even if they dramatically change shape and position.
Creating individual sketches with proper names does take more time to set up. So you have to decide what is most efficient for your workflow. Keep everything in one master sketch, or have it split up into multiple sketches.
Re: from technical drawing to cad
Fair…
Although with the given information, I don't think the tangent assumption is a big leap… A note on the drawing stating that would be helpful but in the absence of such a note and given the lack of any dimensioning on the center point of that 2-1/2" R, I think that tangency is implied (see, it's not an assumption anymore 😉)
Re: How to create this specific mate ?
Hey @eric_pascual, so when the grey part rotates, it in turn rotates the red part? The Tangent mate should be able to do this. It will need some helper shapes to get it working properly since there currently isn't a "Partial tangent" mate which would allow it to be tangent only when it's touching. Feel free to share a link to your document if you need assistance getting the tangent mate to work.
Re: can free users create teams with other free users?
Yes, but you have to share a doc (like @Ste_Wilson says) or folder to the team. Then it will appear under "teams" filter for other person. If you're just sharing with one person, avoid teams and share direct.
Re: Optimization Solver - New Feature on fs.place
Looking through the code - bit similar indeed….great minds think alike?
@MichaelPascoe - very different solution to Konstantin's
But this all proves why I made fs.place - we need a better way to search for features.
Optimization Solver - New Feature on fs.place
I've gotten a number of request over the years for features that have a measurement based constraint such as perimeter or area. The topic has also come up on the forums a few times (https://forum.onshape.com/discussion/18610/how-can-i-use-perimeter-as-a-constraint). My answer to the question has always been - to optimize a surface/body you have to decide how to vary it, which requires design intent. Coding design intent into a feature is fine, but it isn't easily generalized.
But then the obvious solution hit me - just derive configured instances. Allow the parametric model to solve all the difficult design intent modifications to the model.
Introducing my new feature: Optimization Solver
This feature derives a given model for a specified range of a configuration variable - measuring the geometry at each step - and keeping the step that is closest to a provided target.
The user can then improve on the result by reducing the range of inputs, until a satisfactory result is reached.
This effectively allows for perimeter constraints in sketches (albeit with some design process caveats), and inferred dimension constraints.
In the public demo document I have a cube constrained to a volume, a sketch constrained by the face area and another sketch constrained by total edge length.
This is a paid feature - available on fs.place along with many other high quality features.
But you can check out the public demo document here:
