Re: Improvements to Onshape - December 13th, 2024
Thank you @NeilCooke and @Paul_Arden ! Thats awesome.
"beta" for us meant all Render Studios created until including February, as then Render Studio is "officially released".
Re: Deep negative imprint like in plasticine
There's a custom feature called Project Body that is useful for this. It can basically cast the "shadow" of a part, which you can then use as an extrusion profile. I worked up an example here. Now what I'm not sure of is whether Project Body will work on an stl, but I kind of doubt it
Re: In-context modeling feedback loop – am I doing it wrong?
I' trying to under stand your work flow, What is the second assembly supposed to accomplish? Is it your assembly that is slowing down or the part studio or both?
Typical work flow for me would be to start with part studio to begin fabricated parts.
Build assembly and edit first part studio in context for things like bolt holes. Start with insertion of rigid parts like motors and cylinders(they may be subassemblies, Not exactly rigid but fixed within constraints). Subassemblies provide better focus with out the clutter of main assy.
If you want a new part studio because first one is getting slow then start a new context that new parts will go into or because you'd like separate types of fabricated parts. Sheet metal, weldments, frames, 3 printed, etc.
If the assembly is slowing down you can move groups of parts into subassemblies. Your exiting mates will be brought with and should continue to work.
Building a second reference assembly sounds like a of work and some confusion to my mind. Which one am I working on and why are my mates not behaving as expected?
Re: NEW Custom Feature: Thread Decal
@eric_pesty Thanks for checking. I don't have access to Render Studio at the moment so I can't trouble shoot, but I assume you're right. I don't think it would make a very pretty render anyway though (maybe better than nothing). If you didn't have modeled threads I imagine some mix of displacement maps, and roughness maps would produce a much more believable result.
@glen_dewsbury I suspect something like what you describe will happen natively eventually and I'll be happy yet again to have a feature of mine made obsolete by something better. As for adding multiple selection fields, yes I could do that, but I don't think it's functionally different than just using the feature twice. It feels to me like wanting to have multiple selection fields in the fillet tool so you don't have to have a folder full of individual features, but in practice it would be the same amount of work to use and harder to troubleshoot when it fails. If this is a case you find yourself bumping into over and over ping me about it again though.
Thanks @Oliver_Couch
Re: Making a grommet to fit a curved surface
@dave_woodward078 When sweeping, try selecting the Lock profile faces option. This will keep the sweep aligned with your reference face.

Re: Making a grommet to fit a curved surface
I changed the sweep profile to look nicer. Then checked of 'lock profiles to faces' for the sweep with a much better result without all the layering.
Best select a fairly soft material that will compress around the stack if you're looking for a seal. If for abrasion resistance add some gap between stack and grommet from a harder material. Not so hard to stop it twisting the body. If there's a lot of these to make I'd think about a molded to shape of body and stack. Could also be done with just outside flange with nubs to snap into body and glued.
Re: Making a grommet to fit a curved surface
I had to use Lock Profile direction vs faces. to get the desired result. Completely forgot about those options but a much quicker way to get the end result with those modifiers.

Re: NEW Custom Feature: Thread Decal
Your rational is about the same level as mine for having an expanded selection set so ignore.
It's a pretty sweet FS as is.😁 Something I've wanted to see for years.
Re: Where are US servers?
The latency from anywhere in the US to us-west-2 (Oregon) is easily low enough for CAD work. If your connection stutters or forgets to load, that's a different issue. You should look at your machine and local network. Are you seeing this same behavior on all the machines you are using?
Your latency and GPU metrics look fine from my POV.
Re: ANYTHING I add to a 4 item sketch causes undefined! A tad frustrating...
Without "Show Constraints" on, or direct access to a public document, it's impossible to help solve your issue. Most likely you have things over-constrained, but in a way that Onshape is not immediately flagging.
