Dimension without Constraint

Is there some way I can place a dimension on something, without it being a constraint?
For example, if I set a dimension between two lines, I can't drag the lines closer, unless I first delete this dimension constraint.
I'd like a measurement between the two lines, so that I get visual feedback when I move the lines.
Makes sense?;)
Any way to do this?
