Graduation, Education Plan, and Public Documents

For those of us on the education plan, what exactly happens when we graduate and our plan downgrades? I assume private edu-flagged documents become read-only, but can they be made public after the fact without copying?
Can public but edu-tagged documents be edited without creating a copy? This one's a bit more important for me since I'm maintaining a couple FeatureScripts, one of which is relatively popular, so I wouldn't want to put updates in a different document.
