How to use the Trim function.

I have drawn a square and a circle with the circle centered at the midpoint of one side of the square.  I would like to trim away the parts of the circle overlapping with the square, but nothing happens when I choose the trim function and click on the parts of the circle.  To see the trim function appear in the ribbon at the top, I click on "Sketch" and then click on the scissor (trim) icon.
