Possible to add an optional suffix to part/drawing numbers?

My company builds pedestrian bridges. Most projects are just a single bridge, but sometimes there are more. My drawing number scheme is A##, W##, P## for assemblies, weldments, and parts. When I have more than one bridge I would like to add a -## for each bridge (A00-01 for bridge #1), but if there is only a single bridge I don't want to add anything. Is this possible to code in the pattern validation field?
