For this example, I would suggest using a surface molding workflow. Construct the model using surfaces first, and finish by converting the surfaces to a sheet metal part.

Base sketch
Sketch for perpendicular feature
Offset each sketch with a value of zero to create the surfaces
Boolean union the surfaces together (Knit)
Convert to a sheet metal part. Let us know how you make out!
