Critique of Recent Technical Briefing

The technical briefing is "Defining High Performing Assemblies" by Lindsay Early. Link here for reference.

My critique is that the advice given under "Groups vs. Fastened" will fail with configurations, especially with product lines that are required to be flexible. As the Technical Lead for my company, we design and manufacture a Recycle & Reclaim system (think moving material in an air vacuum) that is used to address a "unique" situation the customer needs a solution for. I say "unique" because while the function of our product is the same between projects, they look different in minor details. And as we all know, minor details will come back to haunt us, sometimes literately. Because of this flexibility by virtue of our product, each customer also has different requirements, whether it's a spacing restriction, ductwork already existing, or a favored door interface because of their electrical equipment; these variations would make using groups a nightmare with configurations. This isn't to say groups are useless. Groups are very useful with imported models and in a quick fix if something isn't working quite right.

Otherwise, the briefing was good. The tips dealing with Fix, Patterns and Replicate are sound. I've been on the frustrating end with trying to animate patterns and realizing too late "Oh, this isn't going to work. Well ****." I know the pain...
