Embedding version information with SurfaceText

I'm creating and testing a significant number of prototypes using 3D printing.   I'd like a way to put version information in surface text automatically.   Is there a way to get this with an expression?

Experimenting for a solution, I found there's a predefined variable named #ID_COUNTER.   So far, it has always returned 12, even after I create a new version.   Interesting, but no cigar.

It looks like I somehow created this question in "Drawings".   Is there a way to move it somewhere more appropriate?

I've done something in the past using configurations.  It's not automatic but does save some time compared to manually chaging the surface text for each iteration.

@burt_harris - I don't think this is possible to automate because all editing is done in a "workspace" which, by definition does not have a version. Then, once you create a new version, you can no-longer edit the model.

Maybe this should be an improvement request? I would see it working somewhat like Revisions on drawings work. In the workspace the Rev table lists the next revision in the scheme with an * next to it. Once released, its updated with the actual revision and read-only.
