Curriculum Idea:
In honor of Earth Day 2021, we have put together a lesson idea that educators can use with their students to teach them about renewable energy sources, get them interested in environmental engineering, and inspire the next generation of engineers to bring sustainable practices to the workforce in everything that they do.

Topic area: Renewable energy, Environmentally conscious engineering practices

Description: Our lesson idea prompts students to familiarize themselves with clean energy sources and then gain an engineering perspective on this topic by modeling an energy source of their choosing in Onshape. To start, have your students research green, sustainable energy sources such as wind turbines, solar panels, and hydropower. This page gives a great overview of some of the most well-known clean energy sources.

Next, students can access various courses on the Onshape Learning Center that may be relevant to their designs. The Introduction to Surfacing course gives a great overview of surface modeling. Also, students can learn about Custom Features in Onshape that may help design a wind turbine’s airfoil, for example.

Finally, have your students design their chosen renewable energy source in Onshape! They can reference our wind turbine model for further inspiration.

Learning Objectives: After completing this project, students should be able to:

  1. Surface modeling
  2. Custom features
  3. Renewable energy sources
  4. Environmentally conscious engineering practices

    @Domenico_DiMare
    you probably meant to have the same link under "wind turbine" and "Link to model" . Currently "wind turbine" points to a non-public document.
