Extruding/removing a shell

Hi! I am fairly new to on shape, and 3d modeling in general. I was wondering if there was some way to extrude/remove a shell into an object. For example. I am trying to make a captain America shield, and put 0.5 inch lines into the shield. Is there any way to do this. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I will also add pictures below for more context.

Hmm. Trying to understand exactly what you are trying to do. I'm already seeing lines on the shield so that's where I'm feeling confused.
