Is there a tutorial on how to set the guides up properly. 

I have attempted created a sketch but it fails.

All the tutorials I have looked at on this site always show these guides already made to use with these.

    jeffrey_price, did you use "pierce" constraint between every guide line and every profile?you can share your document as public,and give URL here, we can help you analyze the reason.
