Structuring assy's for BOM purposes

Do you make new assy's specifically to organize parts into specific sub-assy's so the BOM is structured as the parts/assy's will be purchased from suppliers? I know when in design mode, often times it makes sense to model part studios and assy's a certain way. But when transitioning to mass production mode, perhaps another structure makes more sense. I'm wondering if I'm better off making new assy's exactly how the BOM should be, rather than try to modify the assy's I already have, that have in-context editing, etc.

I'm coming from Creo, where we had WT parts, that were solely used for creating BOM's in Windchill. What is your experience with this topic? Thanks for any comments.

*Edit: Or, do everything in Excel, and move things around there as needed, which is what I've been doing thus far.
