Can select my sketch when I go to extrude surface but not when I go to extrude solid

I am trying to cut holes out of a shape I have made in Onshape. I select my sketched circle okay, go to extrude and it has my circle selected and defaults to surface, but when I go to the solid tab it deselects my sketched circle. If I reselect the circle it now won't let me select only the circle. It includes the surface I used as my sketch plane, as part of the circle. I don't know why it's doing this, it's really annoying. Am I missing something obvious?
