Controlling the axes of mates

I hit a problem where I created a slider mate, which was supposed to allow motion on the Z-axis, but instead the motion is on the Y-axis.  As part of the dialog box that pops up, I should be able to select the axes of motion; I could select X or Y if I wanted, and one of these would surely work for the problem I'm having.  The axis of motion should not be "wired in".  In fact, I could imagine situations in which I needed a sliding mate in Z, and a sliding mate in X, and a sliding mate in Y.  I apparently don't have that freedom of choice.
