Making a very simple chassis for a mobile robot

To practice modeling, I have a very simple chassis for a mobile robot in mind.  It's basically a box shape consisting of 6 steel plates and 4 wheels.  Each steel plate is 30"x15"x.25".

On the two side plates, there are two holes on each side where the wheels connect to the motor shafts; 4 motors in this case.

As a complete newbie to 3D design, my intuition is to create one side plate with an extrude depth of 1/4", and two holes with a remove type extrude.  This can serve as one part, that can then be re-used on the other side.

The top is just a simple rectangle that is 15x30x.25 inches, and this can be one part, that is then re-used as the bottom, front and back.

Following the online tutorials I can successfully create the side plate with the two holes.  I am now stuck on how I can create a new part?  Do I:

1. transform all the sketches and extrudes up to this point as a single part?
2. create a new part studio?

What is the correct way to accomplish this?

Hello and welcome to Onshape! The self-paced courses in the learning center will definitely by a good place to start learning the ropes of parametric modeling.

To your question, there is not one "correct" way to do this - it depends on your design intent. If you want to reuse a part is multiple places, the best solution might be to create an Assembly. You can insert multiple instances of the same part and place them in the correct location. But Onshape also allows mutli-part modeling in Part Studios, so you can create all different parts referencing the same geometry, and transforming the features to create a new part is one solution. Hard to know the best option without seeing the document.

    Best,
    Matt
