Outlook to improve part/face appearance configurations

The current implementation of configuring part and face appearances to me and my colleagues here seems quite a bit confusing and clunky.
we can get the end result we need but if you come into the [project trying to figure out how someone has set up their drawing with various appearances it is very unclear.

Solidworks in this area although very buggy with stability appears to be much clearer in understanding where and what is configured in their appearance panel and display state panel. would be nice to see this improved a bit as we nearly always have to use face and part appearances to communicate surface finishing and also tool directions, draft etc etc.
Sometimes in sock models we might have some imported files that contain hundreds of parts or surfaces and having these populate in the appearance panel makes things very untidy, yes I know you could do a composite closed part etc but there should be a better way to navigate appearances in my opinion. I wonder if others feel the same way?

To expand on this further, when doing drawings, often you set up your drawing with views and the general dimensions and layout then come back to do your surface finishes etc, at this point there is no way to change an existing drawing view to reference a different configuration it is quite clunky, a display state with face appearances would be far better than trying to change configurations which onshape then in turn treats as an entirely new part.
