Assembly patterning of components with recursive mates (cable-chain assembly)

Trying to make an assembly of a cable chain that will move dynamically; however, it is very tedious using revolute mates and replicating these links with the mates. Is there a way to pattern a component WITH the mates so each link will be mated to the previous one? If not is is possible to replicate a replication (so instead of replicating a single link each time, you could replicate the first one, then first two, then first four, etc).
