is there a limit to the number of controlpoints on a spline?

After adding some dozens of control points on a spline I can't add more. Is the number of control points limited?

    Can you share a screenshot or link to a public model?

    Are you talking about a sketch spline, or a Bézier spline? 

    There may be an upper limit, but I haven't run into it. Perhaps you're trying to do something with a single spline which could be done either in a more simple way (fewer points) or in multiple splines.
