I would highly recommend going back to the source and figuring out better export settings.
Solution, export from Adobe as Ai or SVG
Import in Inkscape, opensource
Export from Inkscape as DXF, there are a few option's to try.
Good luck
In the past I would often need to ungroup and get rid of compound paths in Illustrator, and then export to AutoCAD DXF (not poly lines) with it set to not the latest version (I think 2005 or something).
I don't have Illustrator at the moment to test. As @dirk_van_der_vaart mentions, you can also use Inkscape to save as DXF.
