"TOOL CANNOT SPLIT THE SELECTED PART" when split with a plane

I'm trying to split a part with a plane that is determined by a face of the part as highlighted in the picture below so I can split the edge from the major body
I tried several things and found that
1. The part itself can be split by any upright plane like the Right plane. The plane I want to use is slightly tilted but I don't think that's the reason why it didn't work.
2. For the problematic split step, if I uncheck the "Keep both parts" option, then it worked, but I need both parts.
Could someone help explain why this split doesn't work? I'm really confused after days of searching.

I am not 100% sure that I fully understand you issue, could you share a document?
On another note, you should be able to also use the split feature using just the highlighted surface, no additional plane needed.
Are you making sure that you are selecting all bodies that you want to split?
Hope this helps, let me know how it goes. Cheers
