Remove from other part if removing part hollow

T3rm1T3rm1 Member Posts: 8
I have one hollow part and I want to cut into an extruded rectangle so that part of the hollow part is within that block. Is this possible? I tried to do it with the boolean tool and split tool but that was not successful because it only removed the wall part from the block.

The holder is a spline that I extruded as surface and then used thicken. I didn't want to extrude it as a solid (which I think would work better with the boolean command) because it isn't as easy to make it hollow then.

There are a few different ways to do this.

One way would be to use the Split feature. If you share a link to your document, we can help you implement it.

Is this what you're after? you can use the Delete Part feature to get rid of the leftover parts. For the one on the left I added a Replace Face feature to make it match up to the top of the grey block before Boolean.

    Hey @T3rm1
Here is one of many ways to accomplish what you're looking for. Simple revolve/remove for the tapered part and extrude/remove for the other . Could be done as Boolean/subtract but then requires a delete part after to get rid of left over bits. In part studio3 the new thin extruded does a nice job instead of surface and thicken. BTW only one transform is necessary for X & Y & Z.

    Hey @glen_dewsbury
thank you so much for this. The solution with revolve/remove is really cool. I never would have thought about that. I still need to get used to this new way of thinking
I also like how you used the thin extrude. I haven't used it before but will do for sure in the future.

I have one more general question. What would be considered best practice to design such a model? Is it ok to model the different holders in separate part studios or should this rather be done within one part studio?

My personnel preference would be one to use one part studio for something like this how ever, the derive is very handy if you have an existing part that could be in any part studio or an other document. Leveraging an existing part is better than redrawing and having duplicates floating around.
One part studio or many is going to be dependent on the work flow you choose. One part studio can be very convenient until a lot of parts build up at which point you may find performance issues or may find it's just too much for your focus.
