Cutting an wrapped area out of a cylinder

Hey,
I would like to cut out the dark blue area from the cylinder.
Later then I would like to do it in a pattern.
I know, that I could make a part of the extra area and delete it, but then it wont work in a pattern.
Could you please help me?
