Tutorial? Help with creating and using derived parts in FeatureScript

blackslateblackslate Member Posts: 16
I have a FeatureScript project where I plan to create a complex body once, and then re-use it many times to make an impression on the surface of different bodies. I believe that this would be a good candidate for using a derived part, but I have not found all the information that I need to achieve my goal.

I specifically want to work with FeatureScript, not with the interactive UI.

Here are some of the resources that I have found:
  • The Milk Crate Capstone Project, which is part of the FeatureScript Fundementals course. This shows you how to use a derived part, but which does not explain how to create one.
  • The Derived entry from the Help. This explains how to import an existing derived part, but not how to create one.
  • The Configuration entry from the Help. This explains how to create named configurations with particular settings, but it does not explain how to set up a derived part so that individual settings can be given using a configuration map, as in the Milk Crate Capstone project.
To showcase a bare-bones version of what I hope to make, I have created a Cubic Dice (with no markings) and a Derived Die, which could be used to add the same markings to each face of the dice. The result would be a dice where all the faces are identical, so it gives you the same result every time you roll it. (Totally useless, I admit, but easier to imagine that what I really want to make.) I'm stuck about what to do next.

If there is no tutorial yet anywhere that shows how to create the Configurations for the Milk Crate Lattice, I would be happy to happy create one. But first, I'll need to understand all the steps that are needed.
