Following a curved path in an assembly

outstandingoutstanding Member Posts: 56 ✭✭

If I want the vehicle to follow the curved rail (blue), what kind of joints can I use?

I have tried using my imagination but cannot see, how this can be made to move in Onshape.

In other tools, I can imagine creating a mate between the wheels that then "slides" along the curved path. I will likely make a revolute joint since the curved section is a circular arc. How would you approach this?

    Hey @asko_kauppi,

Could you share a link to your (public) document so people can have a look?
Should probably be feasible with a couple of tangent mates. Thanks

Of course! V18, then open "Vehicle Rolling A":

I added a tangent mate between the front wheel and the curved main rail, in V19.

This is the first time I'm using a tangent mate. Did read the documentation, but here it's clearly not doing what I would expect.

    Expected:
    - wheel surface follows the curved rail

    Actual:
    - there is some constraint, but the selected faces don't touch

I still made one - simplified - model of the situation.

    1. If I choose a face for the Tangent Mate, it acts weird
    2. If I instead choose an edge, things remain more tidy

What I did to create such a mid-edge is make a slight draft to the extrusion of that wheel. This will likely get me further with my model, but clearly work could be done to improve the Tangent Mate.
