Modeling around object

Ok I have modeled a simple model of an object that I want to make a sort of clip or holder for.
Now how do I go about using this model within a new Part so that I can model "around" it?
Basically I want to use this to shape and see how it will fit together.

Start by sketching on faces of your simple model and extruding (new) these will be the "hands" holding your model, then you can continue modeling using faces of parts to build up your clip/holder. On each subsequent extrude use (add) rather than new. In no time you should achieve your clip or holder.
