How to create the negative of a piece ?

Hello,
I am a beginer and I was wondering how to create a negative of a piece, in other words, I just modeled kind of a plate and I would like to model a mold of it so I would like to remove my plate from a simple cylinder. Is there any one who could help me ?

    Hello Lisa. If not already in place, arrange the parts in a desired position and use Boolean (subtract) to do the job. - Scotty
