Software glitch on helical sweep?

Hey kind folks,

I've been beating my head against the wall on an issue for a while that feels like a bug.  I'm modeling an automotive spring and the top coil has a slightly different pitch. I have a couple of helical curves that touch.  When I try to extrude the final helical sweep instead of starting at the beginning of my helical curve and sweeping to the end, the software appears to be starting as if my swept curve was in the MIDDLE of my helix and sweeping it symmetrically (including off the helical drive curve as if it was running the other way). Hard to describe but here is a video:

Any idea how to fix this? It's driving me nuts!
