Mate connector (in part studio) bug?

I first create a part, then sketch on this part and extrude to create a second part. I want to replicate this second part in multiple instances, and I decide that I want to use mate connectors. To add the mate connector to the second part, I first translated the part by z, to get it off the original part and have free access to the surface where I wanted the mate connector. I add the mate connectors, one on each part, and then I mate the parts by these connectors, putting the second part back exactly where it was.

However, now the mate connector for the second part hangs dangling in mid air:

I realize that if I now delete "Transform 1" (the original z-transform of part 2) in the feature tree, the dangling mate connector is removed and everything looks OK, but shouldn't the mate connector have followed part 2 during "Transform 2" anyway?

I also realize that this workflow is not the correct one (I could have hidden part 1 instead of translating part 2 by z), but I still think this was unexpected. I did make sure that the mate connectors are owned by the correct parts, so having it dangling like this shouldn't be possible?
