I have a problem with adding thickness to an object

I'm having a situation where I can't add thickness to an item with a mesh. I cannot even extrude on such surface. Can I even turn off the mesh? If someone could propose a solution, it would be greatly appreciated.

Why are you starting with an STL file in the first place? Can you get a Parasolid or STEP?

It's possible to clean up mesh files, but it would be much better if you didn't have to.
