Design Challenge - Digital Sundial

I don't even know how I ran across this, but it is cool - a sundial that displays the time digitally:

The creator used OpeSCAD to model the parts.  Everything is open source, but Onshape doesn't import OpenSCAD files and the stl files are just that, stl.

Here's the challenge, reverse engineer this in Onshape with the logic and option to change or add to the display.  Simple things such as AM/PM are the first step, but GOOD MORNING/GOOD AFTERNOON, SIESTA! or just something fun are the real goal.

The challenge on this side of the pond is not so much the engineering as getting enough sunshine to confirm that it works! No doubt it will turn up one day but meanwhile thanks to the Onshape team without whom the proposed modifications to my car would still be a dream and thanks to the forum contributors who keep turning up with great solutions to the problems that trip me up.
