Loft fails when guide curve is too severe

This is my part. The highlighted curve is the curve in question here.

This curve is being used as a guide for a loft. It is working fine in the screenshot above, but I need the curve to be "curvier." See next screenshot:

If I adjust the curve to be what I want, the loft fails. I can understand that this is a harder shape for the loft to generate, but I know that this geometry is "possible," it's just that OS doesn't know what I'm asking for. The error in the loft says "Current selections would create a self-intersecting body."

So what methods would I use to create my desired geometry? Do I have to create some more profiles between the start and end profile? I would rather avoid that if I can, but I will if I must. But I'm not certain if that would even help me here?
