Text in feature pattern, Surface Text fails

Trying to create a series of holes with increasing sizes, for 3d printing. I would like to print the size along the hole. I can do that with feature pattern and the Surface Text featurescript, but only for the first few holes. The featurescript noticies window shows "throw Must Provide a Surface", and I do not know yet where that comes from. Then I tried using just the plain Text feature, but it seems the feature pattern does not recompute the text for each pattern, i.e. the text always stays the same although it refers a variable that changes during the patterning. What am I doing wrong?
(I know I can manually type these texts in and call it a day, but I would rather understand what is going on.)
