Surface Text (NG) resets part names? Can this be prevented?

Surface Text (NG) seems to blow away part names -- is there a way to preserve part name and ID after adding surface text so that downstream features don't break?
I have to rebuild downstream selections any time I use ST, and when the number of characters changes.
Example: I put "g1" on this part, and it resets the part name to "Part 5" and I have to rebuild all the selections for the subsequent linear pattern. Then I change it to "g.1" and all the selections I just created fail.
Am I missing an option or something?

Have you tried using the original Surface Text feature?
I just retried it with Surface Text and it still shows the same behavior.
Part name goes from "Slider" to "Part 5" after application of the feature in either case.
As it happens, Surface Text also fails to create Raised New, even though it successfully creates Raised Add and Cutout Add with the exact same settings, which is a bit confusing.
NG succeeds at creating New.
