Project "Use" Tool Limited Functionality

I've been having some difficulty getting the "Project" tool to fuction efficiently with 3D scans.
I suspect the limitations are because I'm trying to project the outline of high resolution 3D scans with fairly organic geometry. Are there any tips or tricks to get it to work more effectivly? The tool we use in the "other" software is extremely powerful and effective but this one feels frustratingly clunky. It'll never project the outline of a round or curved scan and even struggles with more symetrical "flat" scans. I keep getting the "Some of the face edges cold not be used in the sketch". I have to resort to selecting points around the mesh and go back and connect the dots manually. Not exactly an efficient method.
Is this tool only designed for use with standard CAD models/drawings? Is there work being done to improve on this fuctionality? I'm pretty new to Onshape and trying it out to see if it's a viable alternative to our current software.
Cheers!
