Faster way or shortcut to rename things

peter_van_westenpeter_van_westen Member Posts: 15
I am a strong supporter of naming things to what they actually are or do.
So instead of "Sketch 4", "Extrude 23", and "Mate Connector 17", I want to rename them to something that I actually recognize if I open up the file a day later.

And yes, I can rename things in onshape. But it is SOOOO cumbersome to have to right-click, move to "rename" and click repeatedly for every singly thing.

Would it be possible to simply add a shortcut ket that would trigger inline replacement in the lists on the left?

So hover over a feature or part or folder or whatever that can be renamed and hit "r" (or whatever) to rename it.

Click the feature in the tree, hit Shift-N. Or while you're working on a feature, hit Shift-N.

I like well named part/feature lists too... So  I wrote: this https://cad.onshape.com/documents/8430fb350d753c30baca955d/v/5bc0f2a19e99306ee9eeb469/e/52f10ff9b8c867fd527f6483

The Auto rename custom feature allows you to select the body-creating feature(s) and assign a base name. Benefit is when the body-creating feature(s) are edited e.g. number of items in a pattern, then the naming keeps up to date.

    S1mon , I've got to try this Shift-N thing - thanks

    @GregBrown Thanks, great auto-rename feature!

I would desperately love it if curves would be named by the feature that created them at least. Having curve 1, curve 2, …. curve 87 is not easy for finding things. I realize that there's not always a one-to-one relationship between a feature and a curve, but there are ways of dealing with that as well.

    Still missing a bulk-rename feature.

Why not just the ability to select multiple parts (or other things), hit Shift-N, and type a name. Then it would use that as a prefix to rename them:

    • My New Name-1
    • My New Name-2
    • My New Name-3
    • etc.

Also, the Shift-N is currently pretty irritating, as it doesn't deselect the part after renaming. So when selecting the next part, 2 parts are selected. So you need to select-shiftN-type-enter-space-select-etc.

Another tip, you can name multiple parts at a time by selecting all of them at once in the feature tree, then right clicking and editing the properties. This will not let you set a different suffix for each, but it might speed up the process a bit.

@MichaelPascoe Yeah, that doesn't really solve anything. That just makes all parts have the same name, and you still need to go through each to rename it to something unique.

I can't understand that it hasn't been made so much easier to bulk rename stuff in onshape. Surely EVERYONE using onshape runs into this often. So cumbersome!
