Putting radial holes in a Sphere

This might sound more complicated than it is. I am trying to build some simple toys, and using Styrofoam balls. I want to show an octopus with 8 legs, using a 2 inch Styrofoam ball for the body, and the positions for the ( Pipe Cleaner) legs. IF I .
I know if I aske the question - somebody will have the simple answer. Maybe even insert them at an angle?

All of the Mate connectors remain normal, and the holes which use the Mate connectors naturally follow.
